So I did end up going out after work last night for a few drinks and a lot of laughs with friends. My new favorite drink was recommended to me last week by a co-worker, L, and it’s so yummy – blueberry vodka + a few splashes of Rose’s Lime Juice on the rocks. Ask for it next time you go to a bar – it’s so simple and surprisingly yummy. Well, I guess not that surprising considering I love pretty much any flavored vodka with Crystal Light lemonade when I’m at home.
Got home kind of late (like 3 am) and gobbled down a bowl of broccoli soup before bed. Slept in a little this morning – nice. Woke up and showered and went out to lunch with my friend B. We went to a longtime local favorite Mexican restaurant, Rosa’s. It’s really close to where I live, hence the song lyrics/post title today. 🙂 I forgot my camera and have been having issues getting photos off my Blackberry lately, so I didn’t take any pictures but Google Image Search will help me out here.

I was sitting on the bench just like that girl waiting for B, but I was sitting in the sun and talking to a guy who was selling tangelos and grapefruits from a cardboard box. The restaurant is just a little hole-in-the-wall in a strip mall, but it’s pretty cute inside and very authentic Mexican. I don’t know, I used to think it was a really good place but in recent years I’ve found it sort of disappointing. I have another Mexican place that I like a lot better, but B never wants to go there for some reason.
So we had some chips and salsa, of course. I absolutely love chips and salsa and never get sick of them, to the point that I rarely buy tortilla chips because I can (and will) eat a family size bag all by myself. But I managed to keep myself to only a few today. The salsa at Rosa’s was good, you could tell they roasted the tomatoes and chiles first. Looked a lot like this:
I got a topopo with shredded beef. I thought it was really weird that I hardly found any photos online when I searched “topopo” but then I remembered that probably more people call it a “taco salad” and, yep, that search yielded more results. This kind of looks like the one I had…
…except mine didn’t have those big hunks of cheese going up the sides, and had a nice glob of cottage cheese on top. But it gives you an idea of what it looked like. It was pretty good. I didn’t finish it, though, too big. I was a wee bit hungover/overtired and the nice icy Diet RC tasted better than the food.
I got kind of snacky later when I was home and wanted something sweet, so I had a Clif Mint Chocolate bar.
These are so good – they’re like Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies, but better because they’re chewy and have more texture. Love ’em. I really like all Clif bars but they don’t really make me feel full, so I kind of save them for dessert and don’t have them too too often. What are your favorite brands/flavors of bars?
Oh, and I almost forgot the cutest thing from today…when I got home from lunch, this had been carefully placed on my doorstep:
A little wildflower, left as a gift for me! It had to have been put there on purpose, it was just too perfectly placed and the bushes those flowers grow on aren’t anywhere near my house. I was pretty sure I knew who my secret admirer was – there’s a family in my complex with two little girls who I’ve sort of befriended when their football ended up on my roof and I climbed up on a ladder to retrieve it for them. They’re SUPER cute and have unbelievably good manners. And sure enough, a little later I heard one of them outside say, “mommy, she got the flower we left her!” when they went walking by. So sweet – that really made my day. 🙂
Did some homework and cleaning, then dozed on the sofa with kitty while watching What Not To Wear. Had a bowl of broccoli soup before heading off to work.
Got home around 11:00 pm and had a baked potato with turkey chili and Greek yogurt.
I also had a whole wheat hamburger bun with strawberry jam on it but didn’t take any pictures.
Had two Viactiv for dessert, one chocolate and one caramel – tastes like a Rolo when you eat them together!

I was watching Thelma and Louise this afternoon on tv (for about the millionth time) and trying to decide who was hotter in that movie, Brad Pitt or Michael Madsen, when Brad Pitt’s character threw out that line and it made me laugh. Great movie. If you’ve seen it, who do you think is hotter (the way they looked then, not now!) of the two? I think they’re perfectly cast for what I’d want them for: young cowboy Brad Pitt for a lil’ lovin’ and then sweet rugged Michael Madsen to marry, haha.
But the two girls are obviously the coolest characters in the whole movie, hands down. Mmm hmm. 🙂
Okay, enough randomness! On to foods!
Went out early this morning for some appointments and running errands. Took a ton of water and a big cup of Diet Mountain Dew with me (yes, I know, artificial sweetener is poison but it’s about my one remaining vice in this life so I let it go…for now) and didn’t have any breakfast. I don’t know – I like breakfast when I have time but I don’t always feel that I *need* it. Everything I read says how important it is and all, but I have honestly never noticed a difference between the times that I have eaten it religiously and times when I haven’t. Yeah. If you have any thoughts on this, post ’em. I’d be curious to hear what other people have experienced with the whole breakfast/no breakfast thing.
Anyway. Got home around noon and of course was pretty hungry by then. So was my cat! One of the appointments had been her monthly bath at the groomer, which she actually doesn’t mind, but she always returns home STARVING! So we ate.
I had bought some brown rice sushi (California rolls) from the local natural foods store while I was out, so I ate that…
…while I cooked up a pot of shrimp and soba noodle soup. You may be starting to get the feeling that I love soup – yep, I do! Always have. When I was a little girl, I used to love soup for breakfast and I stil love it for pretty much any meal.
I adapted this recipe from one I found in a magazine. Another thing you’ll see when you follow my food habits is that I almost never make recipes exactly as they are written. I love to add more veggies, switch out things I don’t like for things I do, etc. This came out pretty good! At first, it was decent but the broth was kind of boring…then I remembered a little can of instant won ton soup broth granules in the pantry that I bought at the asian market not long ago, so I added some of that and THEN it was super yum.
I made up a new batch of iced peppermint tea today, so I thought I’d show you all my nifty little tea brewer. I get my tea loose leaf from http://www.adagio.com (they have great tea, good prices, fast shipping!) and brew it in a neat little thing that I got from them, too. It’s pretty cool – first you put your tea leaves into it
Then you pour boiling water into the pitcher over all of the nice peppermint leaves, and let it steep for a while.
And then – this is the cool part – you pick up the little pitcher off its base and set it on top of the container that you want your tea in. It causes some kind of valve to open so the tea pours into the container, but all the leaves stay in the pitcher! Super cool.
I make it pretty strong because it only fills about a quarter of my container so then I fill the container the rest of the way up with water and – voila! – perfect iced tea!
Laid on the sofa with my sleepy, fluffy, clean kitty and watched Thelma & Louise while I did some homework. I’m only taking one actual class this semester – which is why I’m home a lot, because I only have to go to campus on Monday & Wednesday mornings – but I’m finishing up two independent research projects so I spend a lot of time working on the computer at home. It’s kind of nice because I get to hang out in my pjs a lot, but it also requires a lot of self-motivation and can be easy to fall behind. In the fall, I’ll be starting my Masters of Public Health (assuming I get accepted to the program) and will be actually at school/on campus a lot, so I’m enjoying this stay-at-home semester for what it is. My sweet kitty definitely likes having me home.
I wasn’t particularly hungry before leaving for work, but I know from past experience that if I don’t eat anything before work, I’ll end up REALLY hungry and sometimes even shaky halfway through my shift. So I had the end of my egg salad on some spinach and romaine with grape tomatoes, a sprinkle of flax oil and a little light ranch dressing.
I may be going out for a few drinks with friends after work, so I’ll post this now and update when I get home later tonight – hope you all have a great Friday night, whether it be socializing, relaxing at home, or something else altogether!
Well, it’s not really the first day of my life but I like using song lyrics as titles for my posts and it IS the first day of my blog. 🙂
Woke up and didn’t have to be anywhere today so I lazed around in pjs and drank iced coffee. Sadly, almost the end of my favorite Trader Joe’s Gingerbread Coffee which I will have to wait for another holiday season to buy again. Yummy stuff. I actually haven’t made coffee in a few weeks, it tasted good.
So I was sitting around, doing homework and putzing around online and drinking coffee, two big glasses. And then I realized that I was kind of jumpy and that it was already noon and I’d had way too much caffeine for having had no food! So I put together a nice lunch.
Egg salad that I made yesterday on a whole wheat hamburger bun with watercress…
And the last bowl from a pot of spinach soup that I made earlier this week (this soup will probably show up a lot – it’s easy, works well with whatever veggies I happen to have on hand, and I love it for breakfast, lunch, or dinner)…
And a big glass of my favorite peppermint iced tea that I make from leaf tea. I only drink iced tea in this crazy big plastic tumbler that I got at the dollar store and I think was actually being sold as a vase! I love iced tea but I hate the way it stains glasses, so I always drink it out of this cheap plastic cup instead so I’m not always scrubbing/bleaching tea stains out of my normal glasses.
It’s a pretty cheery tumbler!
Around 4.30 I had some dinner. I have kind of a wonky schedule as I work 5 nights a week waitressing – I usually leave for work between 5.00 and 5.30 pm, so I eat kind of an early dinner before I go. But I don’t like to have a big dinner because then I have to put on my uniform and rush around all night! So I generally have something before I go, and then something smallish when I get home which can be anytime between 10.30 to midnight. I don’t like eating so late (and sometimes I don’t), but if I don’t it is a really long time before breakfast.
So, before I went in tonight I made a baked potato in the microwave and topped it with some homemade turkey chili that I had in the freezer. I put a nice big blob of Trader Joe’s Greek yogurt on top, which I always use in place of sour cream. I’ve just recently sort of rediscovered baked potatoes, and they’re a really nice fast meal that fills me up.
Got home from work at 11.00 and had a bowl of cream of broccoli soup that I made this afternoon. This is a very easy recipe that my mother made when I was growing up – it uses canned cream of chicken soup so it’s not exactly super “clean” eating, but it’s good once in a while.
Followed this with a cup of Ginger Snappish tea with a splash of fat-free half & half and a Viactiv for dessert.

Hi! I’ve been trying to get going on a daily food blog for a month or more now and kept flaking out – so here I go! I’m just starting this to keep myself accountable. I like to cook and eat healthy but sometimes slip into convenience habits. I also think it will be fun to have a record of what I eat so that I can remember cooking successes (and failures, haha) when I need inspiration.
