A quote from Flashdance, which I’m watching right now. Man, Jennifer Beals was TEH HOTNESS.
I actually wore something that wasn’t a t-shirt and shorts this weekend…my new awesome bondage leggings with thrifted shirt/vest and Wet Seal flats…
The Wet Seal flats are so cute but TORE my heels up…
Pfft…that’ll teach me to buy from Wet Seal, lol.
In more serious news, kitteh has been not eating all weekend and I’m so worried. Taking her into vet Monday morning.
Man, it’s hot. 106 degrees today…109 tomorrow. It’s just too hot to be fashionable. I’ve been in shorts and blouses with sandals…boring.
Went to lunch and then the mall today. I’ve never really looked through Abercrombie before and, wow, their clothes are overpriced but SO SOFT! I’ve never encountered a store of entirely wonderfully soft clothes before. I will look for them at thrift stores.
Some pictures from the past while…
The vet told me to feed kitteh raw calf liver to boost her iron levels. Seriously disgusting. My cutting board looked like a crime scene. Kitteh sniffed the chopped up liver and looked at me like WTF?? I gave the rest of the liver to my mom, who loves liver and onions.
In sad news, a beautiful and sweet 21-year-old girl who dated a coworker of mine for the past three years…died this week in a car accident. So sad. I just feel terrible about it. Wear your seatbelts, kids…she wasn’t wearing hers.
Woke up with a sore throat and the beginnings of a crappy summer cold…go away quickly, please.
Uneventful day as a result. Picked my parents up from the airport and hung out with them for a while. Came home and basically lazed around…feeling lethargic and icky. Watched a ridiculous Lifetime movie and played around online. There was a nice big thunderstorm and a kid from work wanted my shift, so I stayed home. Got some soup from my favorite healthy Japanese place…the soup is called Ramen Land, lol.
Also got a side of yummy seaweed salad:
Good stuff. Plenty of soup left for tomorrow.
Painted leopard spots on my nails tonight…
And coveted items I can’t afford online…
I’m supposed to report for jury duty tomorrow morning at 7:30 am, ugh. If I still feel bad in the morning I’m going to call for rescheduling.
I’m really liking “Help I’m Alive” by Metric (lyrics in today’s post title)…reminds me of The Breeders in the 90s.
Took kitteh to the vet this morning and things are looking pretty good. Going back in a month, keeping her on another course of antibiotics and her iron supplements. Think we figured out why she’s anemic, too, and it makes sense and is the indirect result of a medication she’s been on for her heart. But overall, things seem cautiously optomistic.
They gave her liquid antibiotics – she’s used to taking pills – and I squirted some in her mouth when we got home and the look on her face reminded me of those DO NOT WANT lolcats…
…LOL poor thing. She gave me wounded/baleful looks for the next hour. So I called the vet and went back and got her some pills. Much better.
After her vet visit, I went to breakfast with a friend. I had a huevos rancheros thing which for some reason just didn’t taste very interesting to me.
In the afternoon, I decided to go thrift store shopping. I had a great day! Found all kinds of great basics for the fall/winter. I had this idea in my head of oversized tops to go with leggings and boots/heels as my easy/comfy fall uniform, and found lots of things that fit with that vision.
Also got five other tees (just basic stuff too boring to photograph), a black turtleneck sweater, and two science-geek books. Grand total = $60. God, I love thrifting.
I’m off tonight so I’m relaxing at home. I’ll have some more of that soup from yesterday for dinner…yum.
Ugh, I can’t believe I just quoted Madonna…not a fan. But it seemed appropriate for this next post.
TWO POSTS IN ONE DAY?!?! Madness.
I’ve been doing a lot of online window shopping in the past week, and have identified tonight the items that I plan to purchase. Picture-heavy post ahead.
And I thought it would be fun to post a few previous holiday fingernail pictures. I probably wouldn’t do things like this if I didn’t waitress…but I swear I get better tips when I give out “festive” vibes. Plus I’ll never wear a holiday sweater, so it’s fun to have holiday nails.
Next Halloween is gonna be super cute, I’ve got it planned already. But I do snowflakes every winter because I LOVE snowflakes. 🙂
I want to go out tonight and everyone is busy/working. Wah. Maybe I’ll convince someone to go out with me after they get off work…it’s not usually a tough sell, lol.
Hope everyone had a happy and safe Fourth of July. I worked. But I had festive nails (forgive the sloppy paint job and crummy cuticles):
Pretty low-tech (no cool patterns) but I didn’t have much time.
Kitty appears to be doing much better today! More energy, good appetite…back to the vet tomorrow and we’ll see what develops from there.
I made a delicious new soup recipe today – leeks, white beans, and couscous. I found the recipe online and it turned out so good! Great for summer.
A chef I worked with years ago taught me how to clean leeks, because they tend to have a lot dirt tucked inside their layers and it doesn’t wash off easily. So you slice them up and then dump them into a bowl of cold water. The leeks float to the top (leave them in there for at least 5 minutes)…
…and then scoop them out with a slotted spoon or mesh sieve (or even your clean hands). The dirt stays in the bowl like magic!
The soup came out absolutely delicious…slightly creamy from the beans but not heavy at all, and with just the perfect amount of cumin.
It’s really fast and easy, too. I’ll be making this again. I followed the recipe exactly except I was short one leek so I substituted a zucchini – I think I’ll always do that, it was nice. Oh, and I used Great Northern Beans because that was what i had.
2 teaspoons olive oil
4 leeks, bulb only, chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
2 (16 ounce) cans fat-free chicken broth
2 (16 ounce) cans cannellini beans, rinsed and drained
2 bay leaves
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1/2 cup whole wheat couscous
2 cups packed fresh spinach
salt and pepper to taste
Heat olive oil in a large saucepan or soup pot over medium heat. Add the leeks and garlic; saute until tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in the chicken broth, cannellini beans, bay leaves and cumin. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, and stir in the couscous. Cover, and simmer for 5 minutes. Stir in spinach and season with salt and pepper. Serve immediately.
Just heard Karma Police by Radiohead driving home from work…such an amazing song.
Let’s see – today was pretty lazy. Went to breakfast with a friend at a place we go to kind of a lot. The service was really bad today. I had my usual omelet of egg whites, turkey, bacon, Swiss, avocado, and tomato with fruit on the side. ‘Twas good. Came home and did stuff that needed to be done – emails, making appointments, coercing the cat into taking her pills and supplements, lol. She’s actually being really good about it all.
And then took a nap.
Oh yeah, on my way home after breakfast I stopped at Sally Beauty Supply and bought some stuff…including this incredibly affordable dupe of the Clarisonic facial brush, the i-Skin. So after my nap I had to test it out and, wow, it’s remarkable. I tested a Clarisonic once and found it lovely but not worth the $200 price tag. This i-Skin gave me exactly the same results, at $30. Yay for bargains, I love ’em.
I was wearing this today…another boring outfit.
Old Navy blouse, H&M balloon hem cargos.
I like these old earrings that I was wearing, though – I think I got them at Big Lots lol…
And these silver sandals that I think I got from Target…
I’ve been wearing those sandals a lot so far this summer. They’re as comfy as flip-flops but look marginally nicer.
Work was…blegh. But at least I made a bit of money. Wine class was fun and I was the only one who guessed varietals correctly from “blind tastings”…meaning they wrap the bottle of wine in tinfoil so we can’t see if it’s a merlot, cabernet, zinfandel, etc. So we look at the glass of wine, and smell, and taste, and try to guess. And I was the only one who got it right TWICE. Haha. I rock.
If you haven’t seen the Youtube thing of Hitler finding out about Michael Jackson dying…well, you should.
I’m back! With a fancy new laptop that I love love love.
I also have – as I have mentioned previously – an adorable cat who I love love love…who is having some potentially troubling health issues all of a sudden. 😦 We’re (her vet and I) trying some things and running some tests and waiting to see what happens, hence the title of tonight’s post. She is happy and not in pain, but I’m sort of a stressball inside. She’s almost 18 years old and I know she won’t be around forever, but I’m not ready…is anyone ever ready? Anyway, we’ll see what happens. Send some good kitty vibes to my fuzzball.
Here she is today, the happiest and sweetest girl:
Okay, so what have I been up to? I was busy. And then I wasn’t so busy but my aging laptop went kaput. Then I ordered a new laptop from costco.com and it was going to take 10 days to arrive. Then my dad bought a brand new laptop off craigslist and told me to use it in the interim, and decide which one I liked more when the costco one arrived, and he’d keep whichever I didn’t choose. I liked the little one from CL…but then my new AWESOME SEXY one arrived from costco yesterday and I love it so much more. Which works out well, since I think my dad wanted the littler one anyway.
I have an awesome dad. Awesome parents, in fact.
Other than all that…have been working, reading all the books I never have time to read during the school year. Have also been terribly blowing off the house organization projects I need to do, as well as an ongoing research project. Must. Get. Motivated.
Saw Up in the theatre – it exceeded my expectations by FAR. If you have not seen it, for the love of whatever you find holy, GO SEE IT! Great film.
I have not been taking many photos of food – kinda in a weird place with food but it’s okay. A few things I’ve made recently – this recipe I found online called “Rhinelander lentil soup”. It looks kind of grey and unappetizing but it was pretty good: mirepoix, a roux, rendered bacon, lentils, potatoes. I doubt I’ll make it again, though.
I also made a big batch of whole wheat couscous with oven roasted veggies – eggplant, red onion, zucchini – and kidney beans. Added some sausage and Trader Joe’s balsamic vinaigrette. Pretty yum.
I had a sort of dinner party last week – just a few friends who brought a vat of sangria that was amazingly delicious. Im return, I made dinner. It wasn’t super gourmet or anything, but it was good. I tossed salad greens with halved red grapes, chopped walnuts, sliced red onion, gorgonzola crumbles, and a balsamic vinaigrette. Also served whole wheat gnocchi with basil & garlic jarred red sauce, sauteed with zucchini, yellow bell pepper, garlic, and chickpeas. I had fresh parmesan and homemade basil pesto for people to add to their gnocchi.
It went over well. 🙂
I have taken only two photos of outfits…man, once it gets hot here in the desert, fashion pretty much goes to hell and it’s all about not feeling like you’re living in a frying pan. Examples:
You know, I felt okay in this outfit, and my mom said I looked “frighteningly thin” (she worries because I used to be eating disordered) but this photo makes me think I should never wear it again. My thighs and ass look huge and they’re actually, like, not. Tight, tapered shorts I think are a big FAIL. Anyway, blouse and shorts are both from Old Navy last summer. Sandals also from last summer, Walmart.
This is similarly boring, but I think slightly more flattering (sorry it’s so dark, there were rainclouds overhead and my house has a ton of skylights = lighting is very affected by the weather outside):
Blouse from TJ Maxx last summer, same last summer Walmart sandals. Cargo shorts from a few years ago, boys’ section of Savers (thrift store).
I guess that’s about it. I have decided that John Cusack’s character (Martin Blank) in Grosse Pointe Blank is the epitome of my ideal man. Sorry, Dave Grohl.
